⚡ Dynamic Tariffs: The 30-Second Survival Guide ⚡
Forget the boring old flat rate or the simple “Day/Night” switch. A Dynamic Tariff links your electricity price straight to the live wholesale market, meaning the unit rate changes every 30 minutes.
☕ Help keep Solar Sid independent
Hi, I'm Dale McWilliams (Solar Sid). This site has no ads and no installer sponsors — it's 100% independent. If the guides helped you, you can buy me a coffee to help cover domain and hosting and keep it free for everyone.
What are they?
🌬 High Wind / Low Demand (3:00 AM): Power is practically free, and sometimes even drops below zero (they pay you to take it).
⏰ Low Wind / High Demand (5:30 PM): Prices skyrocket to the point where boiling a kettle feels like it requires a mortgage application.
The best part? Suppliers have to publish tomorrow's 48 half-hourly prices today. You know exactly what's coming.
What does it mean if you have Solar & a Battery?
It means the game has fundamentally changed, and we have the cheat codes.
📈 The Midnight Heist: When prices drop to rock bottom, your Home Assistant server or maybe your inverter (depending on brand) can command your system to forcefully gorge your battery stack from the grid. Filling up the battery for absolute pennies overnight feels like getting away with robbery.
🔋 The Peak Dodge: Between 5:00 PM and 7:00 PM, when grid prices hit maximum, your house goes into stealth mode. You run entirely off the stored juice in your batteries, drawing exactly zero watts from the grid while the rest of the country financially ruins themselves cooking dinner.
💰 The Export Flex: If your plan includes dynamic export, you can hoard your afternoon solar generation in the batteries and deliberately dump it back into the grid at 6:00 PM, selling it for a massive premium when they are desperate.
The TL;DR: If you have a battery and some smart automation, either from your inverter or maybe a Home Assistant server, you can play the wholesale market like a fiddle. If you have a “dumb” house and an electric shower, an electric cooker and a tumble dryer at peak time… may your bank balance rest in peace! 💎 😎
We need to see what dynamic tariffs our suppliers offer in June. I have a feeling they won't be anything as generous as what they are in Europe or the UK, but only time will tell. I'll post an update once we know more.
